In an effort to share spiritual wisdom and promote inner peace amidst the fast-paced lives of New Zealanders, Ven. Dr Mahinda Thero, higher-ordained monk and former research scientist at the Australian National University & Ven. Rathmalane Bakkula Thero has embarked on an enlightening tour across the country.
Objectives of the New Zealand Tour
Organised by the Ministry of Nirvana, the tour aims to address contemporary challenges using ancient teachings, resonating deeply with individuals seeking mindfulness, stress reduction, and genuine happiness. Following a successful tour in Australia, the Thero’s mission in New Zealand is to inspire positive change and foster a community grounded in compassion and spiritual growth.
Planned Programmes in Each City
Hamilton: Deepening Mindfulness Horizons – 13th July – Hillcrest Normal School, Hillcrest, Hamilton
The tour continues at Hillcrest Normal School. The attendees can expect a day dedicated to deepening their understanding and practice of mindfulness:
- The World is a Reflection of Your Mind (9:00 AM – 11:00 AM): The participants will explore the profound relationship between perception and reality.
- Dhamma Discussion & Sermon (from 12.30 onwards) Medium – Sinhala
- Let’s Explore True Happiness & Social Media Overload: Addressing the pervasive impact of digital connectivity on mental well-being of Children.
Auckland: The Gateway to Enlightenment –14th July 2024, Totara Hospice Conference Centre, The Gardens
- Know Your Mind for a Stress-Free Life (9:00 AM – 11:00 AM): This session promises a scientific exploration into stress management techniques grounded in Buddhist principles.

Christchurch: A Hub of Spiritual Activities – From 21st to 31st July
- Public Sermon and Discussion for Adults and Kids (21st July, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Templeton Community Centre): A comprehensive session catering to both adults and children, offering accessible teachings on mindfulness and compassion.
- Do You Know What Inner Peace Is? (9th July, 9:30 AM – 2:00 PM, Canterbury Cancer Centre)
- Know Your Mind: A Scientific Approach (24th July, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Rehua-UC, University of Canterbury).
- The Happiness of Realisation (24th July, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Bealey Avenue).
- Residential Meditation Retreat (25th-28th July, Hibburt Park): A serene retreat offering participants an immersive experience in meditation practices.
Dunedin: Concluding the Tour with Inner Peace
The final leg of the tour will take place in Dunedin on 9th July, where the focus will be on imparting peace and wisdom to university students and the wider community:

- Step into a World of Inner Peace (7:00 PM – 9:30 PM, Otago University Students’ Association).
- The Happiness of Realisation – Part 2 (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Bealey Avenue, Christchurch).
